Many of these cherished recipes in Dr Greenwall’s new book have been recreated by reducing sugar content without sacrificing taste or flavour. It’s bursting with delicious foodie ideas for breakfast, salads, soups, snacks, meat, fish and desserts including:

· Shabbat Challah

· Shabbat Chicken Soup

· Orange Chiffon Cake

· Poke Bowl Salad

· Tuna Burgers

Each recipe is inspired by family, friends and the variety of places where Dr Greenall’s extended family members are located across the world, including Lithuania, South Africa, UK, Australia and Israel.

Although many traditional Jewish recipes are laden with margarine, unhealthy oils, cupfuls of sugar, honey and Golden syrup, these incredible (and closely guarded) recipes, passed down through several generations, have been carefully selected to help keep today’s needs for optimal health and well-being in check. Through the years, they have been adapted, improved and modernised but most importantly, they were originally cooked from the heart and from memory.

The inspiration for the cook book came during the Covid-19 lockdown in London during March 2020. Despite the many challenges lockdown life brought, it enabled Dr Greenwall to spend precious time with her children and husband – preparing as many as 21 meals a day!

The family soon realised they needed to expand their weekly and daily repertoire of what to cook and eat. Approaching a birthday, Dr Greenwall decided they should compile a book of the traditional family recipes they all love to eat combined with healthier, more modern recipes, mixing up a new take on traditional Jewish fayre. She wanted to pass to the next generation a selection of fabulous creations for use at celebrations and special occasions throughout the year.

The book also includes a dedicated chapter to becoming sugar free (which a major cause of tooth decay) and also details Dr Linda’s own family’s immigration story and how this has impacted on family tradition, memories and of course, food.

Dr Linda Greenwall explains: “Our family has emigrated from many countries and collated recipes from all over the world. Each country had an influence on the way we prepare meals and cook. These recipes remind us of happy times with parents and grandparents and the family gatherings we enjoy together: Shabbat, Yomtovs and Simchas. I wanted to collect and collate these before they fade into distant memories which is why I asked family and friends from around the world to help me gather these recipes. Without doubt, the food we eat when we sit down at the table together creates food memories and special times.”
