Dental Wellness Trust | Promotes oral health among children

THE UK IS FACING AN ORAL HEALTH CRISIS

60,000
school days are lost each year due to poor oral health

Tooth decay is the most common oral disease affecting children and young people in England, yet it is largely preventable.

Each child with tooth decay will have on average 3 to 4 teeth affected.

Children from the most deprived areas have more than twice the level of decay than those from the least deprived.

Almost 9 out of 10 hospital tooth extractions among children aged 0 to 5 years are due to preventable tooth decay and tooth extraction is still the most common hospital procedure in 6-to-10-year-olds, according to Gov UK data up to 2019.

WE ARE HERE TO HELP

Many children, especially those most in need, suffer the consequences of the UK's worsening oral health crisis. The Dental Wellness Trust aims to put an end to this critical public health issue by providing innovative oral health education programmes to nurseries and schools across the country.

OUR APPROACH

Oral health education
for children

Our LiveSmart supervised toothbrushing programmes are specially designed to teach children about good oral health. We already reach over 21,000 UK children, but it's a fraction of those who need help.

Raising public
awareness

The right to oral health is a basic human right, yet dental decay (which is often entirely preventable) is still the most common childhood disease world-wide. We aim to change this.

Involving dental
practitioners

We welcome the continuous support of dentists, dental hygienists and their dental teams to help implement our LiveSmart supervised toothbrushing programmes and train teachers about best practice.

WHERE WE OPERATE

To date, the Dental Wellness Trust LiveSmart supervised toothbrushing programmes have been operating in schools and nurseries reaching over 21,000 children in the UK. Our ambition is to roll out these programmes to even more young children.

One such borough is Luton where we are working in collaboration with the Borough Council to deliver our LiveSmart programme. This will be available to some 23,000 children. We welcome other boroughs to join us in our vision to prevent avoidable tooth decay amongst children and young people.

The charity also operates its new mobile dental unit which is stationed permanently at the Dental Centre for Refugee Children in Camden with volunteers offering free treatment and preventative advice to children most in need.

Our work also extends internationally. Currently the LiveSmart toothbrushing programme, which is taught by 15 dedicated Mamas to schoolteachers and school children daily, helps over 15,000 vulnerable children living in some of the Western Cape’s most disadvantaged townships.

In addition to oral health screenings, the charity provides preventative fluoride varnish treatment to help prevent further tooth decay. Without these essential routine oral checks, plaque builds up and attacks children’s teeth which can ultimately lead to irreversible damage and even tooth loss.

Recently, the LiveSmart toothbrushing programme has expanded to include more schools in and around Cape Town and further afield to mining communities in the Northern Cape.
